NEW YORK – X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, experienced a widespread outage on Thursday, leaving tens of thousands of users unable to access key features across multiple regions.
Reports of disruptions surged rapidly, according to outage tracking site Downdetector, with more than 30,000 users flagging issues at the peak of the incident. The spike was most pronounced in the United States around 2:15 a.m. EST, where complaints climbed sharply within a short window.
Users weren’t all facing the same problem. Roughly half reported issues with the timeline, saying feeds were either not loading or appearing completely blank. Others said they couldn’t log in at all, while a smaller portion pointed to problems with the web version of the platform.
Although the disruption appeared to start in the United States, reports quickly spread elsewhere. Users in India, the United Kingdom and parts of the Middle East also flagged access issues, suggesting the outage was not isolated to a single region. Data from StatusGator indicated the problem was affecting multiple countries simultaneously.
As is often the case during major outages, users turned to rival platforms to check whether the issue was widespread. Activity spiked on apps like Reddit, Threads and Instagram, where users compared notes and shared screenshots of blank timelines and failed logins.
Frustration was quick to surface. Some users pointed to what they described as recurring technical issues on the platform, while others speculated—without evidence—about potential security concerns.
X has not immediately commented on the cause of the outage.
