OpenAI Loses Several Top Executives in Fresh Leadership Shake-Up

SAN FRANCISCO – OpenAI is facing another round of executive departures after three senior leaders announced their resignations, marking the latest management reshuffle at the artificial intelligence company as it pushes through a new phase of growth and restructuring.

Among those leaving are Bill Peebles, who oversaw the now-discontinued short-form video app Sora, and Kevin Weil, vice president of OpenAI for Science. Both confirmed their exits in separate posts on X on Friday.

Srinivas Narayanan, the company’s chief technology officer for B2B applications, also said he was stepping down, adding to a widening list of recent leadership changes.

A company spokesperson said OpenAI is decentralizing its science division in an effort to bring research teams closer to groups building next-generation models, products and infrastructure. The move appears aimed at speeding execution as competition in the AI sector intensifies.

The latest resignations come only weeks after Fidji Simo, head of products and business, took medical leave due to worsening health issues linked to a neurological immune condition. Earlier this month, chief marketing officer Kate Rouch stepped aside to focus on cancer recovery, while chief operating officer Brad Lightcap transitioned into a new role centered on what the company described as “special projects.”

The departures underscore the internal pressure facing OpenAI as it attempts to balance rapid commercialization with high-cost research ambitions, all while preparing for what many investors expect could eventually be a public listing.

Weil joined OpenAI in 2024 and initially served as chief product officer before moving into the company’s scientific initiative the following year. The program was designed to build an AI-powered platform intended to accelerate scientific discovery, according to a previous LinkedIn post.

Before joining OpenAI, Weil held senior roles at Meta and Twitter, bringing a strong product and platform background to the startup.

Reflecting on his time at the company, Weil said it had been “two intense years,” spanning product leadership, research collaboration and the launch of OpenAI for Science.

Peebles, who joined in 2023, played a key role in launching Sora, which quickly rose to the top of Apple’s App Store rankings. The app allowed users to create short AI-generated videos and share them on a common platform.

But OpenAI shut the product down last month as part of a broader effort to cut costs and reallocate computing resources toward core priorities ahead of future expansion plans.

Peebles praised the team behind the product, saying staff worked countless sleepless nights to launch the technology responsibly and help shape emerging social standards around AI-generated media.

The string of exits comes at a sensitive moment for OpenAI, which remains one of the most closely watched companies in global technology. While demand for its products continues to surge, leadership turnover may raise new questions about how the company intends to manage its next chapter.
