Musk and OpenAI Clash in Courtroom Finale as Landmark AI Trial Nears Verdict

 

OAKLAND, California — The courtroom battle between Elon Musk and OpenAI is entering its final stage, wrapping up weeks of explosive testimony that exposed deep divisions over money, power, and the future of artificial intelligence.

On Thursday, lawyers for both sides delivered closing arguments in a case that could reshape the AI industry — and potentially redefine who controls some of the world’s most powerful technology.

Musk’s legal team went directly after Sam Altman, accusing the OpenAI chief executive of abandoning the company’s original nonprofit mission in pursuit of massive financial gain.

“People trusted him,” Musk attorney Steven Molo told jurors, arguing that Altman misled early supporters about OpenAI’s intentions.

At the center of the lawsuit is Musk’s claim that OpenAI betrayed its founding purpose. The billionaire says he helped fund the company in its early days believing it would develop artificial intelligence safely and openly for the benefit of humanity — not evolve into a profit-driven corporate giant tied closely to Microsoft.

Musk claims he contributed roughly $38 million under that understanding.

The trial pulled back the curtain on OpenAI’s rapid transformation from a nonprofit research lab into one of the most valuable AI companies on the planet. Testimony revealed Microsoft has invested more than $100 billion into the company as the AI race intensified.

Lawyers representing Musk portrayed Altman and OpenAI president Greg Brockman as executives seeking enormous personal wealth through equity stakes potentially worth billions.

OpenAI’s lawyers pushed back aggressively.

They argued Musk is attempting to rewrite history after walking away from the company years ago, accusing him of waiting too long to file the lawsuit and suggesting the real issue is competition. Musk now runs rival AI company xAI, which competes directly against OpenAI and ChatGPT.

At times, the trial felt less like a corporate dispute and more like a public breakup between Silicon Valley power players who once worked side by side.

Now the decision moves to the jury.

Jurors must first decide whether Musk’s claims were filed within the legal time limits. If they rule in his favor, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers is expected to return Monday for further discussions involving damages and possible restructuring measures.

The stakes are enormous.

OpenAI is reportedly preparing for a future initial public offering that could value the company near $1 trillion, while competition across the AI sector continues accelerating with rivals including Anthropic, Google, and Musk’s own xAI fighting for dominance.

Whatever the verdict, the case has already exposed the growing tension inside the AI industry — a battle between idealism and profit, open research and corporate control.
