SACRAMENTO, CA – California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced he is “on the verge of launching” a satirical meme coin dubbed the “Trump Corruption Coin,” a move he revealed during a recent podcast interview with journalist Kara Swisher. The project is part of Newsom’s broader strategy of using online humor and meme-driven tactics to critique former President Donald Trump and his ventures into the cryptocurrency space.
In the conversation, Newsom presented the coin as a parody project designed to highlight what he views as Trump's ethical issues, positioning it as a direct counter to the former president's token-related activities. “He’s one of the greatest scammers of our time,” Newsom said, adding, “You know what, Donald, we’ll see how your coin stacks up against ours.” The official Trump (TRUMP) coin currently has a market capitalization of $1.6 billion but is down 88% from its all-time high.
The idea, which surfaced publicly around August 27, 2025, remains unlaunched. Newsom described it as a short-term initiative rather than a finished product, noting that he had previously considered naming it the “Smelt” coin before settling on “Trump Corruption Coin” to sharpen the critique.
Newsom's teaser aligns with his increasing use of meme-driven messaging, including activity on X (formerly Twitter) through a "Governor Newsom's Press Office" persona that mimics Trump's style. The coin concept also harmonizes with merchandise from his “Patriot Store,” where satire is a core element.
While details such as a contract address, network, supply, or distribution plan were not provided, Newsom's remarks made it clear the project is intended as political commentary rather than an investment vehicle. Online reaction has been mixed, ranging from applause for the provocative move to skepticism about mixing politics and crypto, with some observers questioning whether a parody coin risks confusing buyers.
Notably, an unaffiliated, community-based token on Solana named NEWSOM predates the governor's announcement, but there is no connection between it and the proposed satirical coin. If launched, “Trump Corruption Coin” would mark another instance of meme culture clashing with political messaging, reflecting how digital tokens have become accessories in modern campaign communications as much as speculative assets.
