PHILADELPHIA —The union representing Starbucks workers announced Thursday, November 20, the expansion of its strike to include more than 20 additional cities and stores, just one week after threatening what it called the “largest and longest strike in company history.”
The union confirmed that the strike will now affect 95 stores in 65 cities, involving roughly 2,000 baristas.
On Wednesday, baristas and their allies staged a rally and protest outside the company’s distribution center in York, Pennsylvania, though Starbucks reported no disruptions to operations at the site.
The union first initiated the open-ended strike on November 13. Earlier in the year, Starbucks and the union engaged in mediation talks in February, and hundreds of workers voted against the company’s proposed package in April. Both sides have accused each other of failing to reach a negotiation agreement but have expressed willingness to continue talks.
