WASHINGTON — Vice President JD Vance delivered an emotional and deeply political speech Thursday at the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service, praising fallen law enforcement officers while sharply defending the Trump administration’s crime and border policies.
Standing before families of officers killed in the line of duty, Vance called their sacrifice “the reason America remains safe, free, and peaceful,” blending personal condolences with a forceful message about crime, immigration, and support for police.
“We love you. We’re grateful to you. And we’re sorry that you’ve had to sacrifice so much,” Vance told grieving relatives gathered near the U.S. Capitol.
The vice president repeatedly framed law enforcement officers as the country’s “thin blue line” standing between order and chaos, while arguing that the Trump administration has reversed what he described as years of anti-police policies.
Throughout the speech, Vance highlighted several officers who died in the line of duty over the past year, including Officer Philip Wagner of Ohio, Officer Suzanne O of Hawaii, and three officers from Pennsylvania’s Northern York County Regional Police Department.
Each story was delivered with long pauses and emotional detail, focusing on families left behind — widows, children, parents, and fellow officers still carrying the weight of the losses.
“These were not statistics,” Vance said. “These were husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, brothers, and friends.”
But the memorial quickly shifted into a broader defense of the administration’s law-and-order agenda.
Vance claimed violent crime rates, officer deaths, overdoses, and shootings have fallen significantly since President Donald Trump returned to office in 2025. He credited stricter immigration enforcement, crackdowns on drug cartels, and tougher criminal justice policies for the decline.
“We stopped handcuffing the police and started handcuffing violent criminals,” Vance declared to loud applause.
The vice president also criticized policies such as cashless bail and accused the previous administration of undermining law enforcement through federal oversight and discrimination lawsuits against police departments.
“One week after I spoke here last year, President Trump dropped lawsuits that wrongfully accused police departments of discrimination,” Vance said.
At several moments, the speech took on the tone of a campaign rally more than a traditional memorial address, especially when Vance praised Trump’s political leadership and promised aggressive prosecution for anyone who kills a police officer.
He said the Department of Justice would continue pursuing the death penalty in cases involving the murder of law enforcement officers.
Still, the emotional core of the speech centered on the families seated in the front rows.
Vance acknowledged that no government program or public tribute could truly repay their sacrifice.
“You lost something we can never repay,” he told them. “But this country will never forget what your loved one gave for America.”
Near the end of the address, Vance reflected on the Secret Service agents who protect national leaders, contrasting that security with ordinary Americans who rely on local police officers for safety every day.
“Most Americans don’t have a Secret Service detail,” he said. “They have you.”
The speech closed with a standing ovation as Vance thanked officers across the country and vowed continued support from the White House.
“Security,” he said, “should be the birthright of every American family.”
